Our Vision

We are committed to nurturing confident, passionate readers who read for pleasure, understanding, and growth — ready to thrive in an ever-changing world.


Intent ��

At All Saints’, we aim to:

  • �� Achieve high standards in reading across the school.
  • �� Develop speaking, listening, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension through a rich, systematic curriculum.
  • �� Broaden horizons by offering a wide range of diverse, high-quality texts.

  • ✝️ Embed our Catholic Values through reading about compassion, justice, and stewardship.

Implementation ��️

Early Reading and Phonics ��

  • Children build firm foundations through daily Read, Write, Inc. phonics lessons,
  • Language-rich classrooms nurture a love of storytelling, song, rhyme, and book talk.
  • Reading is embedded into every area of Early Years provision, creating a vibrant reading culture from day one.

Reading Across the School ��

  • Children read in many ways:
    • Daily phonics and reading lessons
    • Whole-class, small group and individual reading
    • Across our curriculum (Religion. Science, History, Geography and PSHE)
    • Whole Class novels and story time instil a lifelong love of reading
  • Texts are carefully selected to:
    • Build cultural capital
    • Reflect modern Britain’s diversity and our place within it
    • Inspire courage, empathy, and imagination

Teaching and Learning Strategies ��

  • Fluency-focused strategies: echo reading, choral reading, repeated re-reading.
  • Daily Reading Skills lessons from Year 2
  • Whole-class reading skill lesson develops:
    • Rich vocabulary
    • Deep comprehension
    • VIPERS skillsvocabularyinferencepredictionexplanationretrievalsummarising and sequencing skills so that they can make sense of what they are reading.
  • Reading ‘hook’ activities (e.g., drama, art, debate) ignite curiosity and deeper engagement.

Reading Beyond English Lessons ��

  • Every subject includes high-quality texts to build subject knowledge and rich vocabulary.
  • Children practise their oracy skills by talking about books and explaining ideas confidently.

Supporting All Readers ��

  • Regular, detailed assessments identify gaps swiftly.
  • Interventions include:
    • 1:1 reading
    • Small group fluency groups
    • Bespoke comprehension support
  • SEND readers benefit from adapted phonics, multisensory approaches, and personalised reading journeys.

Staff Development ��‍��

  • Staff are trained continually to be expert teachers of reading.
  • Leaders support and monitor reading across the school to ensure excellence in every classroom.

Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) ��

At All Saints’, we believe every child can succeed in reading.

  • Phonics and reading strategies are thoughtfully adapted to meet individual needs.
  • Multisensory, flexible approaches ensure full inclusion.
  • We collaborate closely with families, the SENDCO, and external experts.
